When a Child is charged with a crime
|

A late night phone call from a child in trouble is a parents worst nightmare and is their
first introduction to the youth court system. You will find out that the late night court
movies you watched are not accurate when it comes to youth court AND that your child
may not have the same rights (such as a bond)
So there are a few things that you can do to help your child right from the start:
FIND THE BEST LAWYER YOU CAN: The best way to find the most qualified attorney for
your child is to first educate yourself about the law and the process. The more you know,
the better will be at evaluating the attorneys that you interview.
PUT IT IN WRITING: While everything concerning the event is fresh, have your child and
you put every detail you can in writing. One tip is to use a voice recorder and then
transfer it to writing.
Talk to your child: Believe it or not, sitting down and talking to your child -before, during,
and after an arrest can make a world of difference. An involved parent can assist a child
in making smarter choices.
